Viv played at the right-back position for different teams and his country too. With Brian Clough as the boss, he won two European Cups while starting his career at Nottingham Forest in 1979 and 1980. In 1984, he left Forest and went to Arsenal for £250,000. He spent three years there and played in more than 100 games. He also helped Arsenal win the 1987 League Cup.

In 1987, Anderson joined Manchester United for the same amount, £250,000. He was also the first black player to be the captain of England during a full international game against Czechoslovakia. However, he left Manchester United after four years and joined Sheffield Wednesday in 1991. He ended his pro football career at Barnsley, his last team when he was 37 years old.
