Steve McMichael was born on October 17, 1957, in Houston, Texas. Also, his parents separated when he was very young, and his mother remarried E.V. McMichael, whose last name he took. He has three siblings: an older brother, John Richard, and two younger sisters, Kathy and Sharon. The family later moved to Freer, where Steve attended Freer High School. Furthermore, in his senior year, he played six sports: football, basketball, baseball, track, tennis, and golf. Baseball was his favorite, and he was a skilled catcher, catching the attention of the St. Louis Cardinals and Cincinnati Reds with his .450 batting average in his senior year.

College Career

McMichael was a standout player for his high school football team and received scholarship offers from 75 colleges. Furthermore, he chose to attend the University of Texas at Austin. Also, he played as a defensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns from 1976 to 1979, becoming a first-team All-American in his senior year. He was also the defensive MVP at the 1979 Hula Bowl. During his time at Texas, he received several honors and was inducted into the Longhorn Hall of Honor in 1999. On July 17, 2010, he was further honored with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame.

Professional Career

McMichael started his football career as a defensive tackle for the Texas Longhorns. He was recognized as an All-American and named the defensive MVP in his senior year. In 2010, he was honored with induction into the College Football Hall of Fame. In 1980, he joined the New England Patriots but was not selected. Then, in 1981, he joined the Chicago Bears as a free agent and became one of their starting defensive tackles, helping them win the Super Bowl in 1985.

Steve had a remarkable streak of 101 matches started until his playing time decreased in 1990. Furthermore, he performed exceptionally well on the field, leading the Bears with 11.5 sacks in 1988 and making 108 tackles in 1989. McMichael’s talents were recognized when he was selected to the NFC’s Pro Bowl teams in both 1986 and 1987. Also, he became even more famous for a game-changing play against the New York Jets in 1991, where he forced a fumble and recovered it at the opponent’s yard. He was brilliant. 

Controversy

Jarrett got expelled from the Horsemen, and Debra left McMichael for Jarrett. Seeking revenge, Steve defeated Jarrett to win the WCW United States Heavyweight Championship. In retaliation, Debra hired Goldberg to target McMichael, and he became one of Goldberg’s early victims. Though Goldberg initially took McMichael’s Super Bowl ring, Steve later got it back by attacking Goldberg with a pipe.

After his wrestling career, Steve returned to WCW and feuded with the nWo before leaving in 1999. He came back as a referee for Total Nonstop Action Wrestling. His slow counting in a match got attention. Also, despite his football success, he was named Worst Television Announcer in 1996 by the Wrestling Observer Newsletter.
