John Mulaney recently spoke about a ‘star-studded intervention’, which helped him save his life. This confession comes in his new Netflix special, Baby J. John is a very popular name in the entertainment industry. However, for the unversed, let me inform you that John is a solo standup comedian from America. He worked as a writer for the NBC sketch comedy series Saturday Night Live from 2008 to 2013 and that earned him a great reputation and fame. In addition to that, he also has a reputation for creating numerous popular stand-up specials, which earned him the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Writing for a Variety Special.
However, he has a habit of transforming the stories of his struggles in life into comic materials and he did the same on Baby J. Most might be knowing that Mulaney was battling against alcohol and cocaine addiction and has recovered from that. In his latest stand-up special, he turned his rehab experience into something to laugh at. Therefore, if you wish to know more about this interesting issue, then this article is the perfect stop for you.
Mulaney’s Intervention
Recalling his first call for intervention on December 18, 2020, the comedian remarked that he received a call from his friend for dinner. He stated that he guessed that it was an intervention for him, the moment he entered the apartment. However, Mulaney jokingly claimed that it was a ‘star-studded intervention’. In fact, he has proper reason to say that, as some prominent comics like Nick Kroll, Seth Meyers and Fred Armisen organised it.
He further added in the stand-up special that it was a weird moment for him. Firstly, he was under the spell of cocaine. More strange was the fact that he was sitting among some of the funniest comics in the industry, who refused to say anything funny that night. Referring to Armisen, he added that seeing him serious was the strangest of all things at that moment. Therefore, he claimed that he was going psychotic.
Recollecting his experience, the comedian added that his fellow comedians tricked him like a prank. They were advising him about his life and convinced him to go to rehab. Mulaney made fun of this situation by commenting that at that time, he was very angry.
Consuming Cocaine Before Rehab
This is the part where Mulaney perhaps drew the most laughter. He admitted that after the intervention, when he was travelling by car to the rehab centre, he consumed cocaine, twice. In one instance, he did it inside the car and then again in the bathroom of a ‘Koala baby changing station’. He jokingly added that those places are used for those purposes only.
He reached the rehab centre at around 4 a.m. However, he joked that he had other plans for that weekend and so he carried with him ‘Adderall, Xanax, more cocaine and $2,000 in cash.’ He spent five days at the detox unit of the centre and later moved to a male ward. Moreover, he jokingly admitted that initially, he thought that people at the centre would recognise him. But in reality, no one recognised him and that drove him ‘bananas’. However, now he is happy to be drug-free after that rehab.
