Overview

The Area-51 is a well-equipped, full-featured machine. In this system there is latest AMD Ryzen platform technologies, such as NVMe solid state drives, quad-channel DDR4-2666MHz (and higher) memory, and multi-GPU configurations. Killer Networks gaming NICs, both wired and wireless, are also available for low latency gaming and packet priority.

Because of its abilities, it performs multimedia tasks fast and provides smooth 4K gaming experience. The system is made for users who want a flagship gaming and productivity computer system. The only issue is that it is quite expensive as configured.

Design and Build

The Area-51 definitely leaves a good first impression. The majority of the front panel is covered with strips of dark, glossy plastic, and it measures 569mm tall by 272mm wide. The flat part is surrounded by RGB LEDs, which also rest on the side panels. The power button is the iconic Alienware logo on the front.

The triangle case’s three points are each supported by a metal handle, which makes it simpler to tilt the device to access its different ports and sockets. Excellent build quality is to be expected from a Computer of this size and cost. The case is made entirely of robust metal, and the plastic is no different.

The two graphics cards are plastic-covered models that closely match standard reference units, and the processor is cooled by a large 120mm water-cooler with a single 120mm fan. The motherboard is simple, without flashy heat sinks, RGB LEDs, or any added features. The majority of the wires are multi-coloured, and the power supply is a horrible metal box.

You will get unarranged cables which are gathering over the case and bundling up at the bottom of your system case. The only true room for expansion is at the case’s back, where three hard disc bays and one 2.5-inch slot with ready-made cables are located. Because the side panel lacks a window, having a clean or eye-catching inside isn’t always a necessity.

Performance and Graphics

The Ryzen Threadripper 1950X is unquestionably the Area 51 star component. It’s the top chip from AMD’s ground-breaking 2017 design, with a massive 16 cores and 32 parallel threads. The 1950X does more than just have a large core count.

You get a stock speed of 3.4GHz and with the help of Turbo Boosting you can increase it up to 4.2GHz. It has 32MB of cache and the Threadripper architecture, which means it, supports quad-channel memory and has improved Precision Boost turbo efficiency.

There is no game that demands the use of a 16-core processor. Instead, you can do complex job tasks including video production, CAD design, content creation, and database management with 1950X. The Alienware Area51 Threadripper includes 32GB of 2666MHz memory to help productivity – again, a large quantity that only the most demanding applications will need.

Two Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 Ti graphics cards provide the power. The top-tier GPUs have 7168 stream units and 22GB of GDDR5X memory, so there’s no shortage of power. The two graphics cards are capable of running any new 4K game without breaking a sweat.

The two cards will also support VR headsets, widescreen panels, high refresh-rate screens, and multi-monitor setups on the market. They’re also excellent for work, with sufficient power for video production and other graphics applications.

The thermal performance of the Area-51 was good. It’s CPU and GPU max temperatures were 65°C and 84°C, respectively, are acceptable, and the system was rather quiet in most conditions. If you’re not pushing the components, the system’s low, nearly inaudible hum won’t bother you.

Ports and Upgradability

There are numerous ports in Area-51. It kept the front of the system simple, adding only a slot-loading Blu-ray reader/DVD writer, two USB 3.1 ports, a card reader, and a pair of connectors for a microphone and headphones. There are seven USB 3.1 ports, one USB Type-C port, and two USB 2.0 ports.

S/PDIF, front and centre channels, and rear and side surround audio ports are also available.  You can completely customize Area 51. You can add additional graphics cards, more RAM sticks as well as couple of hard drives.

To upgrade or install a second graphics card, just pull the lock on the connectivity options and twist a few thumbscrews on the GPU support plate. The only time you’ll need a screwdriver is to replace the power supply, which shouldn’t be a problem if you spent the money on the 1,500-watt PSU.

Alien Command Center

On the desktop, Alienware has preinstalled its Command Center software. Once you open the app, you’ll be able to change the colours on the nine zones to one of the 20 colours available in Alien FX, as well as create an effect. You’ll also be able to design lighting sets for system events. But Command Center does more than just put on amazing light shows.

You can also use Alien Fusion to adjust the power settings, and Thermal Controls to change the fan speed and vent behaviour. OC Controls allows you to extract every last bit of performance from the processor and DRAM. If you want to get really creative, there’s Alien Adrenaline, which allows you to create unique shortcuts for specific games.

Final Verdict

The Alienware Area51 Threadripper is definitely capable of handling multimedia jobs quickly, and you won’t have to stop playing your game while your project runs in the background. However, given the AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X’s high price and functionality, this desktop isn’t for everyone.
