Here are some of the best Game of Thrones theories to interest fans of the series. It has been more than a year since the highly debated Game of Thrones finale was broadcasted. Despite the desire of many to erase the memories of that last episode, the internet continues to buzz with discussions and theories about unresolved questions and alternative storylines. We all disliked the final season to a great extent. Of course it was not up to standards. But at the same time, we also have high hopes for the recent House of the Dragon.
Bran and The Night King
After Bran became the Three-Eyed Raven, fans had high hopes for his prophetic powers and expected them to have a significant impact on the show. However, most of the theories surrounding his character did not come true, including the intriguing one where he would unintentionally lead the Night King through the Wall due to being marked in season six.
It seemed that Bran’s marked arm could have allowed the Walkers access beyond the Wall, but that didn’t happen. Instead, it was a dragon’s icy breath that brought down the Wall, leaving fans disappointed.
Tyrion Targaryen
Tyrion has always been a beloved character in Game of Thrones due to his clever remarks, which made him more likable than his snobbish siblings. Fans even speculated that he might be a Targaryen, the result of a romantic relationship between the Mad King and his mother, Joanna.
This theory, known as A + J = T, originated from the Game of Thrones books, where it’s revealed that King Aerys was infatuated with Tywin Lannister’s wife. If this theory were true, Tywin’s final words to Tyrion, “You’re no son of mine,” would have made a lot of sense.
This plot twist would have added much more intrigue to Tyrion’s story than what ultimately happened to him in the end.
The Lord of Light
In the history of Game of Thrones, there was a legendary hero called Azor Ahai who fought against the White Walkers over 5000 years ago. According to legend, Azor Ahai would be reborn to face the darkness once again.
A theory suggested that Jon Snow was the reincarnation of Azor Ahai when Melisandre brought him back to life in season six. This theory stemmed from the belief that Azor Ahai’s descendant would be born from the bloodline of the Mad King, which Jon happened to be. Both Jon and Azor Ahai possessed special swords used to kill White Walkers – Azor with the “Lightburner” and Jon with “Longclaw.” In the books, Melisandre has thoughts that hint at Jon being Azor Ahai, such as “I pray for a glimpse of Azor Ahai, and R’hllor shows me only Snow.”
Many fans believed that Jon Snow was the likely candidate to fulfill the prophecy of Azor Ahai.
Bran the Builder
Some fans have speculated that Bran’s character was connected to his ancestor, Bran the Builder, who constructed the Wall to protect the North from the White Walkers long ago. This theory suggests that Bran could have been the same person as Bran the Builder. Also, being a sorcerer of great strength, traveling back in time would have been no difficulty at all for him.
The Mad Queen
We knew Cersei was losing her grip on sanity. She destroyed the Sept of Baelor with wildfire to eliminate the competition. At the same time, she also initiated a war merely to hold onto the crown. All her children died one by one until only she was left. Jaime abandoned her for the Targaryen camp. These are all features of the Mad Queen.
However, Cersei eventually dies in the storming of King’s Landing. It is Daenerys who becomes the Mad Queen after that.
A Divided Westeros
There was a theory that Westeros would return to being divided into Seven Kingdoms after the Night King’s defeat. This idea stemmed from the belief that Aegon the Conqueror had united the kingdoms to confront the Night King, and once that threat was eliminated, the kingdoms would revert to their independent states. However, this theory did not come to fruition.
Jon Snow the Night King
This theory suggests that Jon Snow would have become the next Night King. Some were even rooting for him to become the archenemy of Westeros. At least, that would have been more preferable to going to prison for the murder of his lover and the queen. Now that is a theory worth putting to the grave. We all know what happened to Snow after the rebellion. And wishing a beloved character the worst of fates? Now even a hardcore fan does that. However, let us see what happens in the upcoming Snow series on HBO.
Tyrion the Killer
Tyrion is one of the most interesting characters in the show. He is intelligent, knowledgeable and at the same time a seasoned diplomat. Also, he has a cold disdain for his sister Cersei. Right from their childhood, they have hated each other. Tyrion promised Cersei all her joy would turn to ash in her mouth. Now it would have been a wonderful thing if Tyrion had actually killed her. But that never happened.
Jaime the Killer
Jaime’s character eventually went downhill in the later seasons. The conniving warrior, the best swordsman in King’s Landing and the smitten partner of Cersei, he could have ended better. But no, he went down with his lover in the roaring inferno that was the destruction of their beautiful palace. Many fans speculated it would have been much better if Jaime was Cersei’s killer and now the falling debris. Now there is a theory we could put our weight behind. An incredible character development, too.
Night King wins the War
Before the final season aired, this theory gained popularity among fans. Since Game of Thrones was known for its dark and unpredictable twists, this grim ending wouldn’t have been too surprising.
The Night King and his Army had caused immense devastation throughout previous seasons, and prior to Arya’s remarkable move, he appeared invincible. Imagine being an ancient evil and being killed by a girl with a dagger to the thigh. Now that is a serious downgrade. No justice for the Night King.
Jon and Daenerys for Rulers
An incredibly popular theory, this one. We all were rooting for Jon and Daenerys ever since they met and had their little rendezvous. However, after her second dragon dies during the battle, Daenerys loses her marbles and decides to become a mass murderer. Immediately after that, Jon decides to end her life. Also effectively ending their romance. Now we never got to see this possibility branch out. Which is a damn shame if you ask me.
Happily Ever After
Slightly wishful, thinking Game of Thrones has a happy ending. But there is no harm in trying. According to some fans, Jon and Daenerys run away after ditching their war. Cersei steps down from the throne and goes somewhere else with Jaime to raise their child together. All in all, a very happy ending. But in the words of Roose Bolton, “if you think this has a happy ending, you haven’t been paying attention.”
Arya Kills Cersei
Here is another theory that fans love to speculate a lot about. And it is also quite good. Now Arya Stark spends several years reciting the names of people she would kill in her sleep. Also, she trains with the finest assassin in the world and eventually becomes a Faceless Man. how difficult would it be for her to infiltrate the Red Keep disguised as Jaime and slaughter Cersei? Not much difficult, it seems. Now that is something we would have paid good money to see.
